Your Baby's Room

It's funny how most often the last room we consider decorating is our bedroom, which, as we all know by now, is the most important room of the home. But what about the baby's room? Luckily, we have several months while awaiting the arrival of our new baby to decorate and create the nursery. With joy and anticipation we spring into action - nesting - to create that special place where our newest family member will lay their little heads to sleep, be clothed in darling matching outfits, and be rocked in our arms until the wee hours of the night.

Pleasing Feng Shui Tips for Baby and You.

1. Avoid too many primary colors on walls. The bright colors can become too active and make it difficult for the baby to sleep peacefully. Instead, keep the colors soft and serene; baby colors. You can always repaint once your little one gets older.

2. Make sure all electrical outlets have covers on them.

3. Just like our bed, the baby's crib should be in the command position of the bedroom. If possible, the far corner from the door, out of the way of chi flow - meaning not directly in front of the door.

4. While the crib may look cute and centered underneath a window, this is considered an unstable position, as too much energy will flow in and around the window creating both an uncomfortable draft on your baby and a sense of vulnerability.

5. A family photo or one of you and your spouse is a wonderful way to gently add the energy of family and stability to your new baby's life.

6. If possible, do not let your nursery double as an office or storage space. This creates an identity crisis for the room and can be very unsettling for your baby.

7. People always ask about mobiles. I love them as they gently ride above the baby's crib like birds in the air. My suggestion, just don't place the mobile directly over the baby's head. Think about it, if you are resting on your back would you want something hanging right above your face? No, but down a few inches might be just fine.

8. Save the plants and candles for other areas of the home.

9. Purchase cute bins to keep baby clothes and toys organized. Remember, clutter creates chaos and confusion. A baby's room filled with toys strewn all over the floor can create chaos and a cranky baby.

10. As with us, the bed or crib in this case, is of utmost importance. Please check for safety and comfort. Soft sheets and blankies are a must!

11. One more thing, the diaper pail. I'm sorry but I give these portable dirty diaper holders a big thumbs down. Just a few soiled diapers and warm day and you have a room that reeks of poop and pee! Unfortunately, I have feng shuied many homes where there diaper pail is filled to the rim and the stench is lingering! Could you sleep with that smell next to your bed? But Harrah, there's so many diapers to change. Yes there are. Change the diaper and throw it away. As a mother of four, I can say it only takes a minute to toss the soiled diaper in the trash and both you and your baby will be so much happier.

To you and your baby!

Feng Shui Your Mouth of Chi

In feng shui, the 'mouth of chi' is the front door. This is the area of the home that welcomes new opportunities, new people and new social activities. Depending on where your front door is located according to the bagua map, you may be unknowingly infecting your career with stagnant chi.

Having been in hundreds of homes across the U.S., I can recall many of the front entryways and front doors that not only discouraged positive chi (energy) from entering, but also discouraged me from entering as well! Like the time I went to feng shui a house and as I walked upon the entryway to the front door, I was poked by several overgrown, bare rose bushes acting as little swords trying their best to keep me from getting to the front door. I received several little scratches on my legs which is not good feng shui!

Then there was the time where I was greeted with dozens of cobwebs completely surrounding the front door. When I knocked on the front door a bug or something gross fell on my hand! Yikes, I ran from the door. I'll save the 'inside' story for another post.

And, I giggle every time I think about the house that had a tiny little welcome mat the size of a place mat. In fact, now that I think about it - it may have been a place mat with room for only one foot, or two baby feet!

With that, here are a few suggestions for uplifting your 'mouth of chi' so you may bring a smile to all who enter. Remember, when you give your house some love it will give you prosperity and abundance in return.

  1. Sweep the front porch.
  2. Wash the front door and polish the hardware.
  3. Get a new welcome mat - a BIG one!
  4. Add a planter with colorful flowers.
  5. Hose off or sweep away any cobwebs around door.
  6. Dust off the entry light and make sure light bulbs are working.
  7. Please trim the prickly plants on the walkway.
  8. Remove clutter and garbage from front door area.
  9. Take down your holiday decorations! It's April for goodness sakes!
  10. Add a water feature such as a fountain to encourage cash flow and abundance.
